Road to Emmaus

“Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.”  (Luke chapter 24)

God created us and sustains us in our every breath.  How is it that we can’t recognize His powerful hand in the way the sun shines, and the flowers return each spring, and the wonders of the natural world?  How do we fail to recognize him in each other, in those who need our help?

This work was commissioned by Emmaus Health, a Catholic Medical practice.    They wanted a large work, and my goal was to draw people to take a closer look, to be drawn in to the intricacies of the textures and colors.  I wanted to draw people closer where they could also read the plaque which highlights their mission ” to recognize that every person is made in the image and likeness of God, and that we must put the dignity of the patient at the center of the physician-patient relationship.”
