I love the myriad of artist’s rendering of the face of Jesus throughout history. This 8″ X 10″ painted paper mosaic collage image of Christ is, granted, a fairly American looking rendering. Jesus makes himself known to all people as they can best know Him. To the Asian artist, Jesus has an Asian face. We can be certain that Jesus, being Jewish, had a Jewish face. I understand the shroud to give us a precious window into his face and his suffering.
As Saint Faustina reported in her Diary, Jesus appeared to her with a request to have an image made. Jesus essentially told her that it did not matter what the image looked like. What mattered to Him was that she had the image made. He would put his spirit in it. That portion of the saint’s diary speaks volumes to me.
